The Submission Mission

Luke 1:30-38 tells the story of Gabriel’s visit to Mary announcing the future birth of Jesus and Mary’s faithful response.

Luke 1:37-38 “For nothing is impossible with God.” Mary responded, “ I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And the angel left her.

When is submission to God’s will the hardest? For me it is when it is not what I am want or am hoping for. It is when life get’s harder or great sacrifices are required. When following God, trusting God, brings a loss of something I hold dear it is always most difficult to submit to His will not mine. However, in those instances, life is what it is. When I lose a loved one because it is their time it is out of my control but I have to look for purpose or comfort in knowing that those who have given their hearts to God do not experience death, but life everlasting with Him.

Sometimes I may be asked to give up something else or to sacrifice a dream or desire for the greater good. I cannot see it at the time, but learning to trust God, as Mary did, always brings about the best outcome. Maybe I won’t get what I want or what I think I need or deserve at the time I think I should, but I have to step back and keep my eyes focused on God. Pray and spend time in the Word so I have a better understanding of who He is and what His will is for me. It brings me to my knees because it is not easy. And, I must trust. It’s not always easy, but knowing that He has a better plan brings me comfort and reassurance when it looks like life is out of control.

A beginning, Day 4

Wow! Day 4 already. Time sure flies when you are learning something new; a new skill, a new strength, a new attitude. This week has marked the start of greater dependence on God for something I have said I have asked Him to do in me, but I think maybe it was a less that honest request. I asked God to help me learn to exercise.  Yeah, I know it sounds kind of mundane, but you have to understand that like many people daily exercise is not something I have made a priority in my life. The mere idea of getting up a bit earlier to walk, run, do calisthenics was as far away from my to-do list as chocolate is from bitter herbs. I did purchase a treadmill last spring that I thought would be the answer to my dilemma. "Have it the house where I can use whenever I want," I said. I was determined and I searched high and low to find just the right one. The problem came when it was delivered and assembled. Not all of the parts were there. It’s time for confession. I’ve been really struggling with a lack of motivation, self-discipline and self-control for some time now. Even though I would love to blame my problems on the outrageous and unpredictable state of the world today, it’s not about covid-19 or being on lockdown. It’s not about being cooped up in the house for days or even the seemingly unending period of rain and gloominess.  It’s about the troubled and unsettled condition of my heart. I have been battling thoughts of unworthiness, disappointment, and destructive behaviors. I have spent money I don’t have. I have procrastinated on work that needs to be done. I have gained close to 30 pounds in a never ending cycle of feeding my insecurities and the shame of having let things get increasingly unmanageable.  This has to stop!
